For the first time it is possible for travellers to sail on the mighty Upper Mekong River from Laos to China. This will be an incredible, pioneering 14-night river expedition discovering charming villages, stunning scenery, pristine jungle, and in China, the river’s emerald green waters. Our journey also includes overnight stops in Luang Prabang, Chiang Saen and vibrant Jinghong.

Day 1 UK to Vientiane
Take a scheduled flight from the UK to Vientiane Airport.

Day 2 Arrive Vientiane
Upon arrival at the airport you will be met and transferred to your accommodation.

Day 3 Embark Vientiane (BLD)
Board the boat before lunch and afternoon explorations of this delightful French city including visits to Wat Sisaket Temple, the President’s Hall, Wat Prakeo Temple and the Phatouxay Monument. Set sail late afternoon, and enjoy a welcome dinner on board.

Day 4 Cruising the Mekong (BLD)
Today we cruise upstream, passing lush jungle and tiny riverside villages. Morning presentation on the Lao language and an afternoon cooking demonstration, fill your day. Arrive in Ban Xanakham where we moor overnight.

Day 5 Pak Lai (BLD)
Afternoon visit to the French administrative town of Pak Lai with its colonial buildings and a bustling market. Return to the ship at Ban Muang where we overnight.

Day 6 Ban Park Bor Village (BLD)
Afternoon visit and walking tour of Ban Park Bor Village, set on the banks of the Mekong amidst lush jungle.

Day 7 Ban Mouang Khai Village (BLD)
In the morning we pass the lock that forms part of the Xanyaburi Hydro Electric Power Plant, and continue upstream to the village of Ban Mouang Khai.

Day 8 Luang Prabang (BLD)
Morning sightseeing to the dramatic Khaung Si Waterfall, a butterfly garden and elephant camp, before arriving in the heart of Luang Prabang. After lunch, a tuk tuk takes you round this well-preserved World Heritage Site with its many Buddhist temples and Royal Palace.

Day 9 Luang Prabang (BLD)
Early morning walking tour to see the alms offered by local people to the monks. This is followed by the National Museum, morning market and a free afternoon to enjoy the beauty of Luang Prabang at leisure, before returning to the boat for traditional Laos dancing.

Day 10 Pak Ou Caves (BLD)
Morning sightseeing to the dramatic Pak Ou Caves, a Buddhist sanctuary with spectacular limestone cliff faces. Sail upstream towards Ban Bo, and enjoy a cooking demonstration.

Day 11 Pak Beng (BLD)
Morning walking tour of the market town of Pak Beng. After lunch, if time permits, we explore the charming riverside village of Ban Pak Sip.

Day 12 Chiang Khong (BLD)
Scenic cruising to the border between Laos and Thailand at Huay Say, where we cross into Thailand and re-join the ship at the bustling Thai port town of Chiang Khong. Visit the Golden Triangle and Opium Museum, before cocktails and dinner on board the Champa Pandaw.

Day 13 Ban Dom Moon (BLD)
Sail along the dramatic upper Mekong arriving at Ban Pha Khao. Afternoon walk a steep uphill track to a small temple with stunning panoramic views of the surrounding area. Overnight at Ban Don Moon.

Day 14 Cruising the Mekong (BLD)
Continue up the Mekong to Ban Na Kor and on to a remote sand bank where we moor for the night. Tonight be treated to canapés and cocktails followed by local Laos folklore stories and traditional floating fire lanterns.

Day 15 Guan Lei (BLD)
Arrive in China at Guan Lei Port, for a walking tour and immigration. We are now in Yunnan Province, China – the only luxury ship to make this incredible journey. Continue along the Mekong passing the dramatic, scenic hills.

Note: If the water level is too low, too high or the flow too fast, we may not reach Jinghong. In this case your journey will continue by speed boat and you will stay in the best available 4* accommodation.

Day 16 Jinghong (BLD)
Arrive in Jinghong, founded in 1180 the city has been heavily influenced by its Thai, Burmese and Chinese occupations. After lunch, visit the Tropical Plants Research Institute and Manting Park. This evening enjoy a cultural show, where traditional dancers from 38 different ethnic groups perform a fascinating story of China and its people.

Day 17 Jinghong to Chengdu (B)
Disembark after breakfast and transfer to the airport for your flight to Chengdu and an overnight stay. The rest of the day is at leisure.

Day 18 Flight to UK (B)
Optional tour to Panda Breeding Centre. Transfer to the airport for your flight to the UK.
